Houyou - Cochlear Implant Accessories
Houyou in Japanese means to hold or embrace. Cochlear Implants (CIs) have improved the hearing of many individuals, but during physical activity, they often disconnect from the skull. To address this issue, I designed CI accessories that utilize the ear's natural architecture to remain attached during exercise. Three user groups were targeted: children aged 7-11, adult athletes aged 18-35, and adults aged 65+. I conducted a study and interviewed 12 adults to determine design parameters and pain points. Extensive research on skin-safe adhesives and consultation with material manufacturers resulted in a definition of future material parameters. The final designs drew inspiration from nature, jewelry, and sportswear.
